Background
Millions of people use hearing aids or cochlear implants. They rely on cell phones that are compatible with their hearing aids to ensure clear communication. Cell phones that are not compatible can create audible interference. The resulting static or buzzing makes understanding speech difficult.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued regulations to assist those with hearing impairments. They require mobile wireless carriers and manufacturers to increase the number of hearing aid-compatible digital phones they offer consumers. Information about hearing aid-compatible handset models must be posted on carrier websites.
