People have the right to be free from all abuse. This includes both physical and emotional abuse. They also have a right to live free from discrimination and from crime.
AARP’s policies on personal and legal rights are guided by these six principles:
Policymakers should support and encourage intergenerational cooperation.
Policymakers should explicitly allow private individuals to protect their rights in court.
The fundamental right of all people to be free from discrimination should be vigorously enforced. Policymakers should enact and implement civil rights statutes.
Legislators should enact and strengthen laws against hate crimes. These laws should be vigorously enforced.
Congress should reauthorize the Elder Justice Act (EJA). It should fully fund the EJA and other programs that address elder abuse.
Enforcement of civil and criminal laws should avoid penalizing people with escalating fines, loss of rights, or criminal penalties when the person subject to enforcement cannot sa
