AARP Government Integrity and Civic Engagement Principles

These principles reinforce and sustain government integrity and civic engagement:

Ensure transparency—campaign finance, governmental institutions, and bureaucratic processes should be transparent and open to the public view.

Promote accountability—strong ethical standards should be established and enforced to avert conflicts of interest, prevent the undue influence of special interests, and ensure the integrity of governmental decision-making.

Maximize voter participation—the right of all citizens to vote in free and fair elections should be vigorously upheld.

Provide full and fair representation—legislative district boundaries should promote democracy and electoral competition. They should not be drawn to support incumbency or party affiliation.

Increase civic engagement—older adults should have more volunteer opportunities so they can help address the nation’s challenges and enjoy greater involvement in civic life.
